Biography

A laid-back actor who stood out from Hollywood for his down-to-earth charm and fun-loving lifestyle, Matthew McConaughey was the exact opposite of his image behind the scenes and used his strong work ethic to carve out a vibrant career marked with a number of quality performances. McConaughey made his first impression early on as an older guy who hangs out with high school kids in Richard Linklater's stoner comedy "Dazed and Confused" (1993), and went on to supporting turns in "Angels in the Outfield" (1994) and "Boys on the Side" (1995). He delivered a hailed performance as a small town deputy who is later murdered in John Sayles' indie drama "Lone Star" (1996), before graduating to large scale studio films like "Amistad" (1997), "Contact" (1997) and "EDtv" (1999). Also in 1999, McConaughey made headlines for his comical arrest for disturbing the peace and possession of cannabis - he was found in his home loudly playing bongos naked late in the night. While accepting the subsequent ridicule, McConaughey starred in one of his more popular films, "The Wedding Planner" (2001), and followed up with a darker turn in the serial killer thriller "Frailty" (2002). After a pair of disappointing showings with "Sahara" (2005) and "We are Marshall" (2008), McConaughey received some of the best notices of his career as "The Lincoln Lawyer" (2011), a film that began a rebound some wags dubbed "the McConnaisance," which culminated in a Best Actor Oscar for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club" (2013). Having navigated the peaks and valleys of his career, McConaughey always exhibited a humility and exuberant spirit that was contagious both on and off screen.

Bonus Trivia

.

McConaughey reportedly read from The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino daily. "It's the only book I have read cover to cover," he was quoted as saying in Harper's Bazaar, August 1996

.

"Let's face it. Matthew's got those three things that make you a star: you got to be smart, you got to have talent, and the girls have got to want to f*ck you." – casting director Don Phillips to Vanity Fair, August 1996

.

"I think he's much more like Brando. But I do think he's a total original. I don't know anyone like him. There's an innate integrity and, yes, elegance about Matthew, yet there's a kind of shitkicking, dangerous side to him too." – director Joel Schumacher to Vanity Fair, August 1996

.

"You have certain things that you think about when you set out to make a life for yourself. You have your family name, for one. And you're an American, you've got your patriotism, that's the reason you have to do things right. Another one is 'under God,' whatever that means to you. Well, Texas is the only state where you've got a fourth thing slapping you on the ass, saying 'Do right.' It's a state of mind, you can't explain it." - McConaughey to Premiere, August 1996

.

"My dad's death made me feel I was responsible for myself. Suddenly I understood that each day is a building block to the future. Who I am today is dependent on who I was yesterday. I was a late bloomer. My father's death also made me realize that I had to be responsible in my relationships with others. Especially with my mother. I've become more protective of her. I became a man the day my father died. Nothing in my life gave me more clarity and a stronger sense of responsibility. I've become a better lover, a closer friend and a kinder stranger." – McConaughey to Parade, March 7, 1999

.

On Oct. 25, 1999, McConaughey was arrested in Texas for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and resisting transport. According to police reports, McConaughey was dancing around naked and playing bongo drums with Cole Hauser, a co-actor in "Dazed and Confused" (1993). All drug charges were later dropped. McConaughey plead guilty for violating the city's noise ordinance and paid a $50 fine.

.

He purchased a 1,600-acre ranch in west Texas for $500,000.

.

"I had the luxury of talking to people beforehand about what it [fame] was going to be like. I became good friends with Sandra Bullock, so I talked to her. But as much as you can rationalise [sic] it in your head, you have no idea what it does to your soul. People want a piece of you. Before, if people wanted something from me, if they were being honest and straight, it was like 'sure, no problem.' I was a fairly open person. But afterwards, things happen and you discover that someone has lied to you and you go 'son of a b*tch!' And it's like 'where did that come from? Nobody was lying to me before.'" – McConaughey to the London Times, Nov. 6, 1999

.

"I'll keep makin' a livin' with my life and a life with my livin.' 'cuz when the J's for 'just' and the K's for 'keep', that's livin'." – McConaughey quoted in People, March 22, 2005

.

In 2005, McConaughey was named the "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine.

.

In 2007, McConaughey was named the "Bachelor of the Year" by People magazine.
